MULTIMETER BUYING GUIDE

best-multimeterAs you have been reading our multimeter reviews you have probably noticed that certain characteristics of multimeters are mentioned time and time again as positive attributes. These characteristics are something that should be focused on keenly in your search to purchase the right multimeter for you. For a small electrical measuring device, there is a lot that manufacturers can add to them. By knowing the key characteristics of multimeters you can establish a basis for comparison between the different multimeter models you are looking at.

Here is a list of the key multimeter attributes that you should use when deciding which multimeter best meets your needs:

  1. Price

Very few of us can simply overlook prices when shopping for an item and that probably holds true for multimeters too. Multimeters can run you from anywhere less than $20 to well over $200. Casual multimeter users probably don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a multimeter that works for them, whereas, professionals or heavy electrical do it yourselfers may want to invest more money to get a much higher quality multimeter. So determine how much you will use a multimeter and then set your purchasing budget accordingly.

Keep in mind when shopping that even though you generally get what you pay for when it comes to multimeters, there are some exceptions out there too. That is why it is important to compare similar features between the models you are looking at in the same price range. Don’t always assume the most expensive multimeter is the best one available because there are some very reasonably priced multimeters out there in the marketplace that have all the features of a much more expensive model multimeter.

  2. Number of functions

Obviously the more electrical testing functions you can perform with your multimeter the more useful that multimeter will be to you. Chances are that even if you don’t use a particular multimeter function on a regular basis you will still have use for it at some point in time. So when shopping don’t be afraid to look for a multimeter that has more functions on it than you require; this is especially true if those functions will only cost you a little more to have them.

There is an exception to every rule though and that is the case here too. Be aware that a multimeter that is overloaded with functions may be hard to use and also be hard to set the test functions because they are so jumbled up on the small face of this electrical measuring instrument.

  3. Auto-ranging

It used to be that on all the models of multimeters the user had to adjust the meter settings to reflect the ranges they were taking readings in. These days you will most likely have a choice between doing this manually or purchasing a model multimeter that has what is called ‘auto-ranging’ built into it. Auto-ranging means the multimeter has the capability to adjust the settings on the multimeter automatically to the desired ranges you are testing in. Our recommendation is you should always try to purchase a multimeter that has this capability under most normal testing circumstances.

  4. Testing format

These are the two most common ways that a multimeter calculates the readings that you get on the display while using this electrical measuring device. The formulas that are used in each are much too complicated to go into great detail about here so we will just provide you with a brief overview of them.

  5. Full wave rectification

This is what you will typically find on lower priced multimeter products. It is fairly accurate in its readings but it is more vulnerable to ghost readings and other inaccuracies than

  6. True RMS technology

This is the type of testing format that is found in the more expensive multimeters on our list (usually found on multimeters that cost over $100). It is more accurate than full wave rectification and is also much less subject to false readings. It is the type of multimeter technology that is preferred by most professional electricians.

  7. Display

multimeter-reviewsThere are two types of displays that are usually found on a multimeter product. This is where you see the various results of whatever you are testing for with the device. Most multimeters these days have digital readouts that take the guesswork out of taking a reading. There are however some meters out there that still use a needle display to indicate the reading of whatever you are testing for with your multimeter.

You are best advised to get a multimeter with a digital readout to make using your multimeter easier for you. You would also be well advised to get a multimeter that has a generous size display so that you can see it further away if you are doing electrical testing in an area where you cannot put it right next to you.

  8. Ease of use

We have said many times here there is a very wide selection of multimeters that are available for purchase in the marketplace. Some of those are well designed and others are not so easy to use. It is nerve racking and hard enough to do electrical testing without having a multimeter that is hard to set and read out. That is why it is important to look for a multimeter product that is easy to use. Avoid ones that have small displays that are hard to read out and ones that have the function selections all jumbled up or are hard to read. It is a big advantage when doing electrical testing of any kind to do it with a multimeter that is easy to use.

  9. Frequency of use

One of the biggest decision-making criteria for what type of multimeter you will purchase is how often you will use it. It makes no sense for you to spend a lot of money on a multimeter that you only use once in a while to check and see if there is power going to something. On the other hand, if you are a professional electrician or someone that does a lot of your own electrical work, then you would be highly justified to spend a lot more money on a very high-quality multimeter product. So be honest with yourself about how often you will use your multimeter when making your purchasing decision.

  10. Type of use

Another big multimeter decision-making criteria is the types of electrical testing you will be doing with your multimeter. So you have to put a decent amount of thought into that. If you will be mostly doing something like testing amperage with it then it would make no sense for you to purchase a multimeter that does not have this capability.

I know this is just common sense and you may think I am speaking light of this but you would be surprised the amount of multimeter purchasers who assume every multimeter has all the functions on it that every other one has; this is simply not true so be aware of this fact. There is no standardization when it comes to the types of functions that multimeters have.

  11. Durability

Multimeter use can be done in some pretty rough areas around your home or shop. That means you don’t want to buy a multimeter that will fall apart easily if you accidentally bang it lightly against a piece of metal. You want a multimeter that has such features as a rubber sleeve around it, reinforced edges and tightly sealed digital readout sections. By having these things on your multimeter it will help ensure that you will not have to buy another multimeter for a long time to come. So make sure you get a model that will hold up well under normal use.

  12. Hands-free operation

It can be very difficult to do electrical testing with a multimeter. Much of the time it will require the use of both your hands to do it accurately and safely. Not to mention that sometimes you will be doing your testing in confined spaces where there is very little room to work. That is why you want to make sure the multimeter you purchase has a way that it can be used hands-free. Here are some things to look for that is included in many types of multimeter models:

  13. Stands

These are legs or other attachments that are put on the device so it will stand up by itself on a flat surface. They will usually fold up so they are not in your way in situations where they are not required.

  14. Holders/Hangers

In many scenarios, it is easier to hang your multimeter on a nail or some other protrusion that will hold it up in the air while you are working. So if the multimeter you purchase has something built into it that will help you do this it’s a nice little bonus.

  15. Warranty

Multimeters are devices that have a lot of different parts in them that can fail on occasion and some fail much sooner than expected just like with any other product. That is why it is never a bad idea to check out the warranty that a company is offering on any multimeter that you are thinking about buying. Warranties are also a good indication of how well a company thinks their product is built and can be used as the deciding factor in your purchasing decision between two very similar model multimeters.

  16. Research/Company reputation

Before you go multimeter shopping you should do a little research about them on the internet too. This will help familiarize you with what type of multimeter products there is available in the marketplace and you will also learn a little bit more about the companies that make them. If you are having trouble deciding between two similar models of multimeters, then the reputation of the company that manufactures them might be a good factor to base your final multimeter purchasing decision on. Buying a product from a reputable manufacturer that is known to stand behind their product is never a bad way to go.

MULTIMETER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What is a digital multimeter?

A digital multimeter is a tool that is used to supply a person with information regarding electrical measurements. Many times these measurements are then used to determine what is causing problems with a particular electrical line or product. The readings that it gives you are calculated by measuring two or more electrical values. These values have to do with such things as voltage, amperage (current), resistance and more. It is a must have device for any person to safely work around electricity and they are even widely found in the tool boxes and work benches of non-professional persons too.

  2. How a Digital Multimeter Works

We just mentioned that an electrical multimeter displays a reading by measuring different electrical values. It does this when several different things on the meter itself are put into place. There is usually a set of testing prongs that are plugged into the device in order for the meter to get the electricity feed it needs to give a readout. There is a dial on the meter that is turned in order to position it for what type of electrical reading is being taken too.

The test prongs are touched against a point on an electrical line or current and once that current goes back to the multimeter it will tell the person what the value is of the electrical trait they have the multimeter set for. This value will appear on a digital readout that is built right into a multimeter.

  3. Why use a multimeter?

There are two main reasons that most people use a digital multimeter:

    • Safety

Working around electrical equipment can be very dangerous and even cause you to die if you are not careful. Many professional and home multimeter users have them so they can do such things as make sure an electrical line or device does not have power coming to it so it can be safely worked on. The very first thing that anyone who works around electricity is taught is safety; multimeter testing is a huge part of that process.

    • Diagnosis

The information that a multimeter tells you is used to not only help keep you safe when working around electricity but also to help you diagnose electrical problems. There is an old saying that people who work around electrical lines and products use, “where the power dies the problem lies”. A multimeter is a tool that is used to pinpoint where the “power dies” by doing a variety of different tests with it and then diagnosing what those readings mean.

  4. What are some of the common electrical properties that a multimeter can determine?

For a fairly simple device, you can do a lot of different electrical measurements with a digital multimeter. Here are some of the most common electrical properties that a digital multimeter can measure:

    • Ohms – ohms are used to determine the amount of electrical resistance in an electrical line. Things such as car audio speakers require a certain amount of resistance in order to work properly.
    • Voltage – the technical term for voltage is what is known as an electromotive force. It is measured by reading out the potential charge at two different points on an electrical line or device. Voltage in an electrical line acts similar to pressure in a water line.
    • Amps – this is the amount of current that is flowing through an electrical line at the time of measurement. Different devices require different types of amperages in order to make them work right in most cases.
    • Temperature – this one is self-explanatory
  5. Do you have any multimeter safety tips?

We have mentioned often that multimeters are used a lot so people can take electrical readings to determine if it is safe to work around an electrical line or product. Just like it can be unsafe to work on an electrical line or device, it can also be unsafe to use an electrical multimeter improperly. Here are a few important multimeter use safety tips:

    • Take your readings by holding both ends of the electrical probes in one hand when possible. This reduces the chances that an accidental electric shock when taking a reading will pass through a vital organ.
    • Never assume that your meter is working properly. Always inspect it thoroughly before using it and never proceed working on a line if you don’t get a reading with it. Don’t just test the reading you need for what you are working on either when first using it; check a few different electrical measurements to make sure your meter is working properly.
